About the Stock Profit Calculator

Whether you are reviewing a closed trade or planning an exit, it helps to see the numbers after trading costs. Even small commissions and fees change your break-even price and your true return, especially on smaller positions.

The calculator supports fractional shares and negative results, so you can model losses as easily as gains.

How It Works

Your total investment is the purchase cost of the shares plus the buy commission. The gross sale value is the sell price multiplied by the number of shares. Net profit is the gross sale value minus the sell commission minus your total investment.

The break-even sell price is the price per share at which you would recover the purchase cost and both commissions, for a net result of exactly $0.

Formula

Total investment
Investment = (Buy Price × Shares) + Buy Commission
Net profit / loss
Net = (Sell Price × Shares) − Sell Commission − Investment
Return and break-even
Return % = Net / Investment × 100  ·  Break-even = (Buy Price × Shares + Total Fees) / Shares

Example

You buy 20 shares at $100 and sell them at $125, paying a $4.95 commission on each trade.

Inputs

Buy price
$100.00
Sell price
$125.00
Shares
20
Commissions
$4.95 + $4.95

Results

Investment (shares only)
$2,000.00
Gross profit
+$500.00
Net profit after fees

Break-even sell price
$100.50

With zero commissions, the same trade shows a net profit of $500.00 and a 25.00% return.

Understanding Your Results

  • Net Profit / Loss: Your result after all commissions. A minus sign indicates a loss.
  • Return: Net profit as a percentage of your total investment (including the buy commission).
  • Gross Profit / Loss: The price change multiplied by shares, before commissions.
  • Break-even Sell Price: The sell price needed to cover your purchase and all commissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator include taxes?
No. In the U.S., profits on stocks are generally subject to capital gains tax, and the rate depends on how long you held the shares and your income. Results here are before taxes.
Can I use fractional shares?
Yes. Enter any positive number of shares, such as 0.25 or 12.5. Many U.S. brokers allow fractional share trading.
What if my broker charges no commission?
Leave both commission fields at $0. Your net profit will equal your gross profit. Some brokers still pass through small regulatory fees on sales.
How is the break-even price calculated?
It adds the buy commission and sell commission to the purchase cost of the shares, then divides by the number of shares.
Can I calculate a loss?
Yes. Enter a sell price below your buy price and the calculator will show a negative net result and return.
