About the Credit Utilization Calculator

Credit utilization is your credit card balances divided by your credit limits. It is one of the factors credit scoring models consider, both overall and for individual cards.

This calculator reports the numbers only. It does not predict or promise a credit score, because scores depend on many factors and differ by model.

How It Works

Choose Totals to enter your combined credit limit and balance, or Card by card to list each card. In card mode, the overall ratio uses the sum of all balances and all limits, and each card's own ratio is shown separately.

Balances usually reflect what is reported to credit bureaus, which is often your statement balance rather than your balance on a given day.

Formula

Utilization
Utilization % = Balance / Credit limit × 100
Available credit
Available = Credit limit − Balance

Example

Three cards: Card A has a $5,000 limit and $1,500 balance, Card B $3,000 and $300, Card C $2,000 and $700.

Inputs

Total limit
$10,000
Total balance

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Revolving accounts only: installment loans such as auto or student loans are not part of credit card utilization.
  • Balances you enter may differ from what your issuers report to credit bureaus.

Understanding Your Results

  • Overall Utilization: Total balances as a share of total limits.
  • Per-card utilization: Each card's balance as a share of its own limit.
  • Available Credit: How much of your limits remains unused.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good credit utilization ratio?
Lower utilization is generally viewed more favorably, and guidance often mentions staying below 30%. No specific percentage guarantees a particular score.
Does closing a card change my utilization?
It can. Closing a card removes its limit from your total, which raises overall utilization if your balances stay the same.
Which balance should I use?
Your most recent statement balance is usually closest to what issuers report to the credit bureaus.
Does paying in full each month mean 0% utilization?
Not necessarily. If a balance is reported before you pay it, that reported balance is used even if you pay in full by the due date.
Is my data stored?
No. Calculations are performed locally in your browser and nothing you enter is stored.
